Questions and answers
How much is an MP paid?
$217,700 a year: the sessional allowance every member is paid. 172 of the 337 members also hold a paid role (minister, parliamentary secretary, committee chair, whip and others) with an additional salary on top.
Who has the highest statutory salary?
Mark Carney, Prime Minister at House of Commons, with a salary of $435,400.
Where do these figures come from?
Rates from the House of Commons of Canada’s table of the sessional allowance and additional salaries; roles from its members’ pages. No official list of what each member is paid is published, so PublicSalaries adds the two. Data and sources lists every file used, with its checksum.
What is “statutory salary”?
The sessional allowance every member is paid ($217,700 from April 1, 2026), plus the additional salary the Act sets for the paid role a member holds (minister, parliamentary secretary, committee chair and the rest), from the House of Commons’ own table. It is the rate the law sets for the role, not a reported payment: a member who joined or changed roles during the year was paid part of it. Where a member holds two paid roles, only the higher additional salary is counted, since the House’s table does not say how two combine. How the lists work
Why is someone not on the list?
Every sitting member of the House of Commons is listed. Senators are not: no current table of their allowances is published. Nor are federal public servants: the Government of Canada publishes only the salary range of each job, not what each person is paid.
How do I report a mistake or ask for a record to be removed?
See Privacy and corrections. Each salary adds the House of Commons’ published rates for the roles it lists for the member on the date shown; we fix matching mistakes and handle removal requests there.
